If you need more battery capacity but don't need more inverter power, the Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack is the smarter choice. It contains the same 13.5 kWh battery as a full Powerwall 3 — but without the inverter, making it significantly cheaper.
One Powerwall 3 supports up to three Expansion Packs, giving you up to 54 kWh of storage from a single inverter. That's enough to run a large home through multiple days of overcast weather — or comfortably cover overnight EV charging and heavy loads.
Worth knowing: Expansion Packs add duration, not power output. The continuous power rate stays at 11.5 kW (the Powerwall 3's limit). If you need both more storage and more power, additional full Powerwall 3 units are the right call.

You Can Upgrade.
Tesla now officially supports mixed Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems. A 2026 firmware update enabled the two generations to communicate as a unified system — and Australia was the first market to receive it.
If you have an existing Powerwall 2 setup, PSC Energy can add a Powerwall 3 as the master unit. Both batteries appear together in the Tesla app and operate as one — no separate monitoring, no juggling two systems.
As a Powerwall Premium Certified Installer, we handle the full upgrade: compatibility assessment, Gateway checks, commissioning, and a handover that keeps your existing Powerwall 2 warranty intact.
Book a Compatibility AssessmentSupported configuration: Up to 4× Powerwall 2 units alongside 1× Powerwall 3 (plus up to 3× Expansion Packs). All units appear as one system in the Tesla app.
Gateway 2 required: The original Gateway 1 (grey metal unit) is not supported in a mixed system. If yours is a Gateway 1, an upgrade is needed before adding a Powerwall 3.
Three-phase caveat: On a 3-phase grid connection, continuous output in a mixed PW2+PW3 system is capped at 5 kW. The full 11.5 kW is only available on single-phase connections or in a Powerwall 3-only setup.
Warranty unaffected: Your existing Powerwall 2 warranty is not impacted. The new Powerwall 3 carries its own separate 10-year warranty.
Certified installer required: Must be installed by a Tesla Certified Installer to maintain warranty compliance on both units.
