How to Find Out Which Power Supply Your Home Has

Is It Worth Upgrading to Three-Phase Power for Your EV Charger?

A three-phase EV charger won’t work with a single-phase connection. If you want three-phase charging but don’t have it, you’ll need to upgrade your power supply first.

A three-phase upgrade involves three steps:

  • An application to your distributor (Ausgrid, Essential, or Endeavour Energy) to confirm that three-phase capacity is available on your street.
  • A licensed electrician who runs a new three-phase cable from the street to your switchboard.
  • A switchboard upgrade is necessary in most cases because three-phase circuits require three times the breaker space as single-phase circuits.

What does a three-phase upgrade cost in NSW?

Costs vary depending on your property and how far the cable needs to run, but here are rough figures:

  • Distributor upgrade fee: $1,000 to $3,000 or more.
  • Electrician installation and switchboard work: $1,500 to $4,000 or more.
  • Total: budget $3,000 to $7,000 or more for a full upgrade.

Whether that investment makes sense depends on your driving habits. Ask yourself:

  • Do you need faster charging, or does overnight single-phase charging cover your daily use?
  • Are you planning to buy a second EV in the next few years?
  • Does your home or solar setup have other reasons to benefit from three-phase?

If your home already has three-phase power, it’s best to get a three-phase charger. These chargers usually cost just $300 to $500 more than single-phase models, and installation is only slightly more expensive.

What Single Phase vs Three Phase Means for Your Solar System

If you have solar panels, your phase type affects more than just how fast you can charge. It also impacts how well you can use your solar energy to charge your car.

Single-phase solar with a single-phase charger works well together. Many home solar systems in NSW are single-phase. A single-phase smart charger reads your solar export and redirects that surplus power into your car.   • If you also have a home battery, plan ahead for how your charger and battery will interact. Without the right setup, your car’s battery will drain rather than store solar energy for the evening.
